Tortola Island Banking & Taxes

CURRENCY

The local currency is the US Dollar (USD), which is broken down into 100 cents. Coins come in 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 1$ pieces, while notes are issued in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar denominations.

TAX

TIPPING

Some restaurants add a 10% tax, and an additional 5% tip is customary. For those restaurants that don't add the tax, tips usually come to 15%. Taxi drivers recieve 10% to 15% if they go out of their way for the client. Hotel staff like porters and bellmen generally recieve $1 per bag. All-inclusive resorts don't expect to be tipped.

Traveler's cheques are accepted throughout the country.

CREDIT CARDS

Most major credit cards are accepted everywhere. Many can be used to obtain cash advances at banks and ATMs.

BANKING HOURS AND AUTOMATED TELLERS

Banks hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00am to 2:30pm and Friday 9:00am to 2:30pm and 4:30pm to 6:00pm.
